Sukeban Games has a reputation for combining mechanics and story telling. Their latest game, VA-11 Hall-A, continues this tradition. The team at the studio is mostly Venezuelan, as the country has been going through an economic crisis which has caused widespread famines and shortages of medicines.

The game is set in the year 207X, and while it deals with some of the usual subjects found in Glitch City, such as corporate repression and fascist government control, it’s more interested in questions of survival and labor. It has a very strong LGBQT portrayal and is less likely to depict violence or other forms of oppression than other similar games.

Night in the Woods has a lot of punch for a game without jump scares, resource scarcity or dreadful meta experiments. Night in the Woods is a 2017 indie hit that tells the tale of Mae Borowski. A 20-year-old college dropout, she returns to her dying home town of Possum Springs and tries to reconnect with childhood friends. But everything isn’t quite the same–Possum Springs has been hit hard by the coal industry collapse, and there are secrets that some in her close-knit community would rather keep buried.

Night in the Woods features anthropomorphic characters that embrace youthful frivolity. This may not appeal to older gamers. It’s not uncommon for the dialogue to include slang or jokes that would be inappropriate in other games. However, the characters are so well established it is easy to forgive. Mae’s pesky wit and her best friend Bea’s biting cynicism make it easy to understand and connect with them.

The main plot arc is an aging trojan horse, which ambushes the player by introducing themes of class struggle, faith, and systemic justice. The game is fucked up in some wild places, such as existential horror, the nature and purpose of God, or the feeling of life not being worth living. However, it spends the majority of its time establishing character relationships and quiet moments of friendliness between a small group of people who are struggling to make their worlds sense.

The brainchild of the team behind GaymerX, 2064: Read Only Memories is a cyberpunk point and click adventure set in Neo-San Francisco. This retrofuturism-inspired game is inspired by Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Father and Snatcher. It has several gay characters as well as a subplot about people who have turned into genetic hybrids. It never uses that aspect for cheap humor or to slap you in the face. The story revolves around a journalist who’s looking for a friend that has gone missing. Although ROMs are commonplace in the world of 2064, Turing’s more special because he can choose and act independently. You’ll find red herrings, twists, and turns as you use your journalistic skills. Like any good mystery, the threat is greater than you think.

This is a great example of an indie game that feels fully fleshed out in every way. The colourful world, the narrative, the gameplay, and multiple endings make it well worth your time. And the 2017 update 2064: INTEGRAL brings a cleaner font, new voice acting (including an excellent performance from the robot himself), an expanded script and a playable epilogue chapter that adds to the already expansive experience.

A downtrodden occultist is hired to assist a Space X type project in preventing an asteroid slamming against the Earth. It turns out to be a huge artifact that was created during a war of dimensions in Noachian time. It transmits psychic information and makes people dismember their family. The book avoids being overly heavy-handed despite its bleak theme. The world-building is simpler than in works such as Doug Dandridge’s Empires at War, but depending on the reader’s taste this could be a positive. Annette is a powerful character who bridges The Nameless with George’s earlier work (many of these images feel like callbacks to Gog) and provides the book’s protagonist with agency. Annette also offers a moment’s respite for the reader and protagonist.

The Nameless features an excellent narrator, which makes for a captivating experience. Although some of the characters seem underdeveloped, they develop throughout the story and lead to a satisfying ending.
