Gay games narrative
Video games are an intricate nexus that combines systems and options. These systems include representational hegemonies and labor structures.
A growing number of mainstream games have gay characters, but they don’t always make it clear. Overwatch and Borderlands, for example, allow you to romance the same-sex character but their homosexuality does not feature in the story.

When Persona 4 was first released, the game was heralded for its unafraid to present a meaningful homosexual character. And it did just that. However, it was a game that also fell victim to a lot of tasteless anime tropes when it came to its characters’ queerness.
Take the example of the camping scene between Kanji, Yosuke. Yosuke asks Kanji if he has any problems with girls. This is a dehumanizing and hateful question, which implies that being gay should be shunned.
A series of jokes are then made about Kanji’s supposed sexuality. They imply that being gay is preferring men over women. Despite Atlus’ clumsy attempts to make a joke out of the situation, it still sends a harmful message that LGBTQ people are predatory and should force straight people into their culture. It’s a shame, because the game’s storylines examine how toxic masculinity can harm the male protagonist and how to replace it with self-love.
Gay story games
Video games are a great way to portray LGBTQ characters and reflect the societal attitude towards diversity. From Kung Jin in Mortal Kombat to Makoto Nanaya in the BlazBlue series, video games showcase diverse narratives that resonate with a wide audience.
These games immerse players in virtual worlds and capture them with their heartfelt stories. These stories are based on real-life experiences and explore themes of love, identity, and acceptance. These games are especially meaningful for LGBTQ+ gamers, who can relate to the stories and experiences of these characters.
Some gamers, however, have expressed disappointment at the portrayal of queerness within the game. They claim that it is homonormative and “disappointing”. Others have also criticized the gameplay and the sex of some characters. Dream Daddy continues to be a popular video game despite the complaints. However, it does not address issues of intersectional queerness or queer sex in any meaningful way.

Blizzard Entertainment’s first-person-shooter Overwatch features a number of characters who have rich backstories, which are revealed by the transmedia content. The company’s progressive approach to representation has been praised, but their execution has also been criticized (Shlapak 2030).
Overwatch heroes Tracer and Solider: 76, who are both very popular, have recently been revealed as being gay. Both heroes were revealed through non-game content. For example, a holiday comic which revealed Tracer’s girlfriend Emily.
Discussions of these revelations highlighted the importance of authenticity. This concept entails the fidelity of a character’s characterization, as well the coherence in Overwatch’s fiction world. In addition, the discussion highlights an overall sense of belonging for LGBTQ players. These players are building an alternative, safe space in Overwatch where they can belong. This is similar to how fans and gamers have long created their own spaces of engagement by utilizing fan fiction.

There are a lot of great games out there that manage to fly the LGBTQ flag high without going into tropes or over focusing on diversity for the sake of it. Borderlands is a game that exudes queerness without hiding it behind cynicism and bigotry.
Borderlands has a wide range of queer characters. From a gay friendly demon to a fembot. Even when it comes to a playable character like claptrap, it’s clear that Gearbox wanted to show that being gay is completely normal and not something that needs to be pointed out all the time.
Todd Harper’s essay about the Mass Effect series shows how gay romances are a common narrative in game worlds. While his essay focuses on the mechanical reasons why Shepard is a closet narrative, it also highlights that the game has made space for romance and a happy ending for LGBT characters which is important to note in the context of a genre that was historically vilified.

Video games have evolved into a hybrid of innovative gameplay mechanics and diverse LGBTQ+ topics. Indie game developers are at the forefront of this movement, offering gamers experiences that relate to their own lived experiences. From fantasy worlds and immersive storytelling, games like these offer a sense connection and empowerment.
Axton, the splicer in the popular ‘Borderlands’ franchise was originally not meant to be bisexual, but due to coding errors when reviving other characters, he would say flirtatious lines whether it was a female or male character being revived. Gearbox embraced the accidental bisexuality of the character and have since canonised him as such in several of their DLCs.
Other games are more explicit about the sexuality of gay characters, such as Riot’s “Caitlyn” and “Vi”, who have a romantic relationship. Or, there is ‘If Found …’,, an independent game that tells the story of a trans woman, showing both her euphoria, and difficulties, during the transition.
