Gay porn visual novels
Caper in the Castro (1989)
Often overlooked, Caper in the Castro is considered by some to be the first visual novel gay video game. Released in 1989, it follows lesbian detective Tracker McDyke as she investigates the disappearance of her friend, drag queen Tessy LaFemme. The murder mystery puzzle saga is a tribute to the San Francisco LGBTQ community, with plenty of tongue-in-cheek queer references and puns (like a villain named Dullagan Straightman).
Like many independent games of its time, it faded into obscurity. But thanks to the LGBTQ Video Game Archive, digital games curator Andrew Borman, Adrianne Shaw, CM Ralph, and the Internet Archive, it’s now possible to play this early example of queer gaming history for free.
Though it’s not very challenging, the gay visual novel porn game offers a charming glimpse into gay gaming history. It’s also an important reminder of how far we’ve come in terms of LGBT representation in mainstream gaming.
In the ’80s and ’90s, much of this was negative or even downright mocking, with games like Don Flamenco pitting players against an effeminate boxer that’s easily knocked out, and the infamous Pat Buchanan lookalike in Civilization II. But despite this, some indie games did explore more positive portrayals of LGBT people in their narratives. Examples include Jeremy Freese’s Violet, which allows players to create and explore lesbian relationships, and Anna Anthropy’s Dys4ia, an autobiographical game about the developer’s first six months of hormone replacement therapy.

Love Is Strange (2014)Love Is Strange is a Life is Strange fangame that puts players in charge of Max Caulfield, a photographer attending Blackwell Academy in Arcadia Bay. Its plot does not contain time travel or any of the secret conspiracies from the original game, but it still offers plenty to explore for those who feel betrayed by the ending of Life is Strange.
Team Rumblebee began working on the gay visual novel sex game after realizing that many people in the Life is Strange community felt disappointed by the end of the original story, especially those who romanced Chloe or Rachel. The team wanted to create a game that allowed the player to experience those same feelings of teenage nostalgia, loss and hope, but without the pain that came with the original ending.
The result is a game that does not rely on the cliches of homosexual stereotypes to portray its characters. Instead, the game focuses on the character’s relationships and their emotional impact. It also offers multiple routes, including one that does not involve same-sex couples.
According to the LGBTQ Video Game Archive, gay porn visual novels were released in Asia as early as the 1990s, but they took a long time to reach English-speaking audiences. Until now, the majority of gay games have been action-adventure titles with combat and erotic situations. However, with the advent of Love Is Strange, the genre has expanded to include a variety of different experiences.

There’s nothing wrong with creating a gay game with visual novel porn to speak to a certain community, but it’s also important to do that well. Unfortunately, Burrow of the Fallen Bear: A Gay Furry Visual Novel falls short in both areas.
The story revolves around Krile, a young cat warrior who idolizes the Furry Heroes, a group of five adventurers that kind of feel like the Furious Five from Kung Fu Panda. But as soon as he starts adventuring, Krile discovers that the Furry Heroes are more than just heroes: they’re also daddy figures. And as the young cat tries to impress his new collection of daddy figures, he’ll also have to contend with some horny situations and questionable choices that will test his moral integrity.
In gameplay terms, this is an RPG with classic choice systems. You’ll interact with a variety of characters, fight monsters, buy items that impact the story, unlock branches and explore the titular burrow. The graphics are fine, although the forest and dungeons can get a little boring with their generic design. And the dialogue is often clunky, with an overabundance of anal references and cartoonish ejaculation sounds during sex scenes.
There are some interesting ideas in this visual noel gay content, but the execution is poor. Ultimately, the game relies too heavily on the sexual content and doesn’t manage to balance fan servicing with fantasy worldbuilding. And even the light puzzle solving elements near the end of the game aren’t enough to keep this one afloat.

Yearning: A Gay Story (2017)Harriette is a cheesecake enthusiast and disgruntled college student. She tries not to take herself too seriously. When she’s not writing or avoiding studying, she can be found playing video games and devouring cheesy snacks.
While the number of queer characters in AAA video games has slowly increased, there’s still a lot of room for LGBTQ-themed indie games to make an impact. And it’s a genre that gay sex visual novels — a style of game in which the player interacts with a series of images to move the story forward — are well-suited for.
For example, Team Rumblebee’s acclaimed Love Is Strange, a freeware VN that plays like a Life Is Strange fan game, featured many of the same queer characters as the original game. That sort of inclusivity, combined with the relatively low skill requirements for making a visual novel gay game and their popularity among indie developers, has made the genre a popular place for LGBTQ games to emerge.
Other examples include the NSFW Coming Out on Top, which lets you romance gay men, and Dream Daddy, a dating sim where you can choose to hang out with a wide variety of dads, including religious softbois, gym-bro hunks, and artsy professors. The latter’s a bit of a niche offering, but it was also one of the first mainstream games to feature a non-binary protagonist and generated a dedicated fandom that continues to this day.
