LGBTQ+ Representation in Video Games
The gay video game industry continues to make strides toward more inclusivity, with a recent study showing that 17% of gamers are LGBTQ+. However, for this representation to truly have impact, it needs to be more than just a representational change – games and developers need to seek out stories, voices, identities, and experiences that are not currently represented in their games at all.
One of the first big steps was taken with The Sims series, which allowed gay romances and even marriage in its 1998 release – over a decade before marriage equality was legalized in every state. More recently, gay video porn games like Undertale, VA-11 HALL-A, Night in the Woods, Deltarune, and Disco Elysium have shown that LGBT characters can be both well-written and popular among gamers.
Often, these characters are side or ancillary characters – the player’s best friend in Life is Strange, for instance, can be a lesbian named Chloe, and players can choose to end up with her if they wish. But the genre is expanding into main character representation, too: Aloy, a woman from the Horizon Forbidden West DLC, and other characters in the Horizon and Guerrilla Games series have been described as queer by fans.
The rise in gay porn video sex games with main character representation of LGBTQ+ people is a reflection of the audience who play them, too. Despite the fallout from the 1993 US Senate gaming hearings that painted video games gay as violent and corrupting, many young people are open about their personal identities when it comes to gaming, and this younger generation is pushing for more inclusivity in their favorite titles.

LGBTQ+ Characters in Video GamesA recent study conducted by GLAAD revealed that despite LGBTQ gamers making up a significant portion of the gaming audience, only around 2% of video gay games feature LGBTQ characters or storylines. This number is even more troubling considering that many gamers aren’t expecting much from mainstream game studios when it comes to LGBT representation in their video gay porn game simulators.
Traditionally, when queer players do find themselves in the minority in mainstream gay video sex games, they usually end up with closeted best friend sidekicks like Soren from Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn or camp comic relief, like Ryuji from Persona 5. The rarer games that have LGBTQ characters are often met with skepticism by the majority player base and criticized for being “gay bait” or “queer trash”.
This is why it’s so encouraging to see that there are some major studios making an effort to include LGBTQ characters in their gay video porn games. One example is Fullbright’s 2013 game Gone Home, which tells the story of a family that disappeared and was presumed dead, and features a canonical same-gender relationship between Tyler and Emily.
The Life is Strange series also includes LGBTQ characters, such as Max and Chloe, who can end up together if the player chooses. And 2023’s Honk features a canonical lesbian couple, as well as a bisexual character named Freda and her partner Adagio. These are just a few of the many examples that show the growing trend towards inclusion in video gaygames.

Video games gay have been a great source of romance for many gamers over the years, with numerous same-sex relationships featuring in various titles. Despite the unfortunate reactions from some fans – such as the all too familiar review bombing of Burning Shores for including homosexual romance options and a character who is openly gay – there are plenty of developers that stand proudly by their inclusion of LGBTQ+ characters in romantic situations.
One of the most notable examples of this was in Baldur’s Gate 3, where players had the option to romance Seyka, a member of the Quen tribe that fought alongside the main hero Aloy. This wasn’t the first time that a gay porn videogame featured queer romance options, but it was one of the most prominent in recent times and helped to level up representation for LGBTQ+ gamers.
Other examples of LGBTQ+ representation in video games gay include Beldron and Lunkbug, the gnomish husbands held captive by the player’s party in Grymforge; Sharess, the cook for Chorizo’s Caress in Frogsong, who shuts down any perceived admirers by reminding them that she already has a husband; and the transgender character Athena in Tales of Symphonia. While this representation isn’t perfect and there are still many gay games that leave much to be desired, it shows that the industry is starting to grow up from cliches and stereotypes and begin to tell truthful stories of love, pain, regret and rebirth.

Whether through a character’s backstory or their interactions with other characters, LGBTQ+ players can find impactful narratives that speak to their experiences. While it is easy to overlook the LGBTQ+ community in gaming, developers are embracing inclusion more than ever before. Indie developers in particular are paving the way for video gay game XXX inclusivity through their dedication and passion. The first mainstream queer character was Birdo, the pink, beribboned dinosaur from Super Mario Bros 2. Since then, more gay video sex games have featured gay, lesbian and bisexual characters. These have ranged from the flamboyant and stereotypical to the more subtle and inclusive. However, until recently the majority of LGBTQ+ video gay game romances have been either underdeveloped or a form of “queerbaiting.”
One of the most prominent examples of a free gay video game with a queer protagonist is Dreamfall The Longest Journey. Kian, the main character’s partner, is a gay man. While other RPG’s have had queer romance options, none have matched the depth of this game.
The Final Fantasy series is another example of a gay sex video game with a queer lead character. The player can choose to romance male or female partners in FF9. However, the female version of Byleth only has three women to reach S-Support with compared to four men in the male version. This is a sign that more progress needs to be made in the male to female ratio of video game romances.
