The inclusive Gay Games are the world’s largest inclusive sports, arts and culture event. They are based on the principles of participation, inclusion and personal best.

When it comes to inclusive gay games, few come as close to hitting the mark as Hades 2. While many aspects of this roguelite follow up are familiar, developer Supergiant Games has managed to create a fresh new experience that challenges and delights with each encounter.

In recent years, the Games have been hosted in Hong Kong, Paris, and Guadalajara. While the Games have grown, the Federation has remained true to its original mission: “to promote equity, diversity and inclusion”. Participation is open to anyone regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, religion, politics, athletic/artistic ability, physical challenge, or age”. Desta: The Memories Between

Desta is the latest game from Ustwo, creators of 2014’s mobile Monument Valley and 2021’s peaceful camera-and-scrapbook Alba. Originally launched on iOS via Netflix Games in 2022, the team-based tactics adventure is now a full release for PC and Switch (but without touch support). The gay inclusive game tells the story of Desta, a non-binary adult who returns home to help their mother sell the family home after losing their father. They are anxious about facing their old townie friends and out-of-touch mum, but the anxiety is unpicked in their dreams, as they play out imaginary confrontations in dreamscape versions of familiar locations.

The gameplay combines turn-based tactics with a more playful approach to the dodgeball genre. The characters are all beautifully realised, from Desta’s former friends to the conservative school teacher they confront later on in the inclusive erotic gay game. Moreover, the story tackles topics like regret and self-reflection with care. Even the thorniest moments, like Desta’s fear of being misgendering, are handled with compassion.

But despite the solid characters and thoughtful dialogue, Desta doesn’t quite find its feet as a complete experience. The roguelike elements mean you need to replay each level, and the lack of variety in enemies and maps means this can become tedious, especially after a while. The pacing feels a bit off, too. A non-binary high schooler navigates their final year at school and a world on the cusp of disaster. Montreal-based developer KO_OP has taken that familiar story and turned it into a branching-path cinematic narrative and iclusive gay game set in prehistoric Pangaea, populated by anthropomorphic dinosaurs. It’s a genderqueer maze of relationships, crushes, messed-up family dynamics, and half-formed ambitions – as well as the looming specter of a meteor that could destroy everything.

While Goodbye Volcano High is not without its problems, its focus on teenagers at important crossroads in their lives with a world that’s ending is something to be celebrated. The dialogue is well-crafted and evocative, and Fang’s friends have their own distinct personalities that come through clearly. The narrative choices also feel like they matter, a rarity in gay games inclusive that give players a variety of actions to take but rarely seem to change anything other than the order in which they occur.

As for the world of the Gay Games, Denver is currently one of three finalists in a bid to host 2026 games that would bring 12,000 athletes and spectators from around the globe. It’s an impressive feat and a reminder that, just as the Olympics can make us reflect on the state of the world, the Games have the same ability to bring attention to issues of inequality in a way that other events can’t.
