Few games capture teen angst and queer romance like Before The Storm. Yang’s tearoom-themed game explores homosexuality in a way that feels authentic, without being too explicit.

Similarly, Gone Home’s exploration of the internal and external struggle of gender transition has made a huge impact on gaming. It’s not only major studio games which explore these themes.

ValiDate: The Struggling Singles of Your Area is an interactive visual novel and dating simulation that explores all aspects of intimate relationships. Its protagonists, who are flawed and relatable in their own way, help to create a nuanced narrative about relationships today.

The game follows thirteen characters as they navigate through new relationships and harsh realities of adulthood. Veritable Joy Studios’ debut game features diverse characters such as Malik Paterson, Bopeye’s manager and rapper; Inaya Sifi, a food scientist; and Isabelle Morrigan, a theater instructor who still lives with her parents.

ValiDate is different from other romance games because it allows players to experience first-hand the ups and downsides of being single and young. ValiDate is a real-life romance game that shows that not everyone will find love.

The fates of the characters are yours to decide with more than 30 routes and hours worth of content. Choosing horrible decisions and seeing the entertaining fallout is all part of the experience, and it’s a testament to how well this game understands its audience. The game’s all-people of color team tackles narrative arcs about marginalized communities with empathy and honesty, making ValiDate one of the best gay dating sims of 2022.

Yearning, A Gay Story is a freeware graphic novel that tells the story of a college freshman who is gay but has not come out to his family or friends. The player character has to deal with all the trials and tribulations that come along with a new year of school: making friends, meeting roommates, passing exams, coming out, and eating the terrible food on campus.

YAGS makes a great effort to show a realistic coming out experience. This includes the fear and reluctance that comes with it, as well as the potential negative consequences. The PC can either repeatedly refuse to tell Adam they are gay or finally admit it and face the possibility of him disowning you. The player can also back out of going to Queers & Allies group meetings, but eventually Janet forces them to go and they meet the members of the club (including everyone from Armoured Closet Gay Carlos to nerdy computer science students Hannah, Nikhil, and Jake).

Some of the game’s characters are based on actual people, with a Mass Effect crew member, a Final Fantasy baddie, and an Overwatch gamer girl among them. It takes several hours to play through the game. It contains gay naughtiness and implied sexual content. An optional patch can be downloaded to remove the censorship from game text and graphics.

Thirsty Suitors, from Outerloop Games, is a Scott Pilgrim-esque adventure with a stylish and varied game play. The story is as beautiful as it is interesting for its queerness. Outerloop Games brings you this Scott Pilgrimesque ’90s adventure, in which Jala returns to her hometown, where she discovers her gossipy family, her hot ex, and some delicious South Asian dishes. This bi-sexual adventure mixes skateboarding with turn-based battles, cooking, and RPGs.

Baldur’sgate 3 – Larian Studios’ epic Dungeons & Dragons game – is arguably one of the biggest hits of 2023. It has arguably the most extensive queer representation in any videogame. It’s not hard to understand why Baldur’s Gate 3 was Eurogamer 2023’s Game of the Year. The game features nonbinary and canon gay options, as well as a flexible quest structure.

In more mainstream titles, The Last of Us Part II became one of the first mainstream games to feature a transgender character in a meaningful way, while Celeste – a charming but challenging platformer about a young transgender girl climbing a mountain – is a heartfelt exploration of depression and mental health struggles. Other notable mentions include the cyberpunk bartending sim VA-11 Hall-A, which features many queer characters and even allows you to serve drinks that go against the customer’s desires to branch out the storyline in new directions.

The eerie, beautiful Night in the Woods isn’t your typical visual novel. This is a narrative-driven game that puts emotion before following a linear story. The pacing might be boring to some, but the story is unique and will stay with you after the credits.

This anthropomorphic adventure game features Mae Borowski. She is a young college graduate who returns home to Possum Springs. There, she must face her overbearing parents, the burnt out adults of her town, and her millennials friends, who are still trying figure out what their early 20s mean. It is a funny, honest and harrowing look into the world from the perspective of someone who has no answers.

Night in the Woods’ dialogue is raw and emotional, giving characters a life-like feel. The soundtrack is amazing, as is the art style. The relationships between Mae, her friends and the rest of the game are the most important part. The emotional connection among them feels real, and the game’s authors clearly wanted to give players an opportunity to connect with these characters as individuals. Even the smallest of interactions with animals can be rewarding. It’s a game about how choices can only take you so far when faced with the systemic rot of capitalism and the isolation of small-town living.
