Indie gay games

Queer games are more popular than ever thanks to indie developers and Kickstarter funding. From dating simulators to sci-fi and even horror, these games have something for everyone. Unlike the majority of mainstream video games, many LGBTQ titles explore queer pain and culture with nuance. From Gone Home to YAGS, these indie gay games have a depth that bigger studios struggle to match.

Heaven Will Be Mine

In Heaven Will Be Mine, a sci-fi romance visual novel about giant robots and hot girls, you play as one of three terribly behaved women caught in the middle of a war between three factions fighting over humanity’s future in space. It’s a little bit Mobile Suit Gundam, a little bit Neon Genesis Evangelion and a whole lot queer.

The indie gay porn game takes place in an alternate history post-Cold War universe where humanity has reached the cosmos and found a hostile alien presence, referred to as the Existential Threat. The player’s character can aid the military Memorial Foundation, the idealist space nation Cradle’s Graces or the megacorporation Celestial Mechanics in a tri-sided conflict over dominance of the entire universe.

Unlike most video indie games, which usually have some sort of interactivity to them, Heaven Will Be Mine is mostly an experience of observing and watching. Between missions you get email after email from some schmuck bloviating about all sorts of random stuff that feels more like an essay than a gay game.

Mass Effect: Andromeda

In the hands of a capable player, Andromeda can be a joy. But when compared to infinitely more fine-tuned open worlds like The Witcher 3, Horizon Zero Dawn and the original trilogy, the game feels tired and unfinished.

Mass Effect: Andromeda hews close to its predecessors, focusing on drama and letting you form connections with human and alien characters. It also eschews the class system of old, giving you a full range of abilities and profiles that give your character an extra boost.

That being said, Andromeda is plagued with the kind of problems that have made the series a meme: bad animations and tedious quests. The story is interesting and there are some nice touches, but the lion’s share of missions is busywork – mining mineral deposits, scanning ten Remnant collapsible shelving units or blowing up raider outposts. That’s the kind of stuff that might have been tolerated in a different context, but here it’s dull and repetitive.

Dream Daddy

If you have an ear to the ground of internet culture (and let’s face it, most of us do) then you’ve probably heard of Dream Daddy, the indie gay sex game custom-built to take dad jokes to their logical extreme. While some have criticised it as a money grab by the YouTubers behind the indie game, and others have complained about the gameplay’s lack of interactivity, those people are missing the point; Dream Daddy isn’t just a dad dating simulator, it’s a gay game about loving men.

The majority of the gay indie XXX game is played through the usual visual novel mechanics, with the occasional mini-game to break up the repetition. Most of these aren’t particularly fun, but they do their job of adding a little variety to the gameplay. More importantly, however, is the relationship between your character and her teen daughter, Amanda; their bond feels genuinely genuine even in the most ridiculous of circumstances. It’s a refreshing change of pace for an indie game that could easily have settled for cliche rom-com jokes. The game also does a good job of showing that dads, like everyone else, have a whole lot of shit to deal with too.

Before The Storm

The second entry in Life is Strange’s prequel trilogy, Before the Storm takes place a few years before the original game. It still carries over many characters and locations, but is less of a mystery and more of a close-knit coming-of-age drama. It prioritizes dialogue over clunky puzzle-solving and places Chloe Price front and center. As a result, it deals with some difficult topics including sexuality, death and loss and drug use. It also addresses gender and racial identity in ways other indie gay games don’t.

The writing is solid and Deck Nine shows a lot of love for the world of Arcadia Bay, filling it with music and scenery that fits Chloe’s personality perfectly. Some of the scenes are incredibly funny and others deeply touching, often at once. For example, a scene in episode one where Chloe plays Dungeons and Dragons with her friends is hysterical and poignant at the same time.

This is a strong installment in the series and it definitely makes up for some of the flaws of the first indie gay porn game. It’s a must-play for fans of the franchise, especially those who enjoy Life is Strange.

The Tearoom

The Tearoom is a 2017 independent game by developer Robert Yang. Described by the creator as “a historical public bathroom simulator”, The Tearoom explores erotic, historical practices of public sex with men known as cottaging in tearooms. The player must navigate a series of rooms, while avoiding police interference.

This erotic simulation features an elaborate system of eye contact and stances that allows players to wordlessly seal sexual consent through the use of body language. The player must also juggle multiple sexual partners at once, and must keep an eye out for potential police interference or other unwelcome guests.

The Tearoom is a indie game about transforming the world around you by seeing (creative, erotic) potential in all corners and crevices. If nothing else, it will make you never look at a bathroom, park, or office the same way again. And who knows, maybe you’ll even be inspired to cottage in your own bathroom one day. Just remember to bring a cup of water and some snacks. The Duchess of Bedford would approve. She’s the one who invented afternoon tea after all.
