Cartoon gay games

While live-action animation has been making strides in LGBTQ representation, gaming remains a largely straight affair. Thankfully, some developers are starting to break the mold. Some are embracing gay themes, like the gender non-conforming Birdo in Street Fighter II and flamboyant Vega in BioWare’s Mass Effect 3. Others are taking it even further.

My Ex-Boyfriend the Space Tyrant

My Ex-Boyfriend the Space Tyrant may be a new addition to the growing list of cartoon gay games, but its developer says it’s not aimed at straight players. “I don’t think anyone should be tricked by the idea that a game is designed specifically for them,” Luke Miller told Polygon in an email. “I’m hoping that people won’t begrudge a game like this from time to time, much as they would a book or movie.”

Space Tyrant follows the adventures of the player-controlled Captain Tycho Minogue as he battles an interplanetary tyrant in a cartoon gay porn game of campy science fiction action and tongue-in-cheek sexual banter. Miller doesn’t shy away from the fact that his cartoon game is unashamedly gay, and he says that’s what makes it stand out. “It’s a sci-fi adventure about love between two guys, and it’s just really easy to make jokes about that kind of stuff,” he said.

Other gay cartoon sex games with gay themes include 1989’s Caper in the Castro, a murder mystery/puzzle-solving title that was credited as the first ever LGBT game. More recently, the erotic dating simulator Coming Out on Top and 2015’s Read Only Memories have included gay characters. And while the five minute interactive experiences like Humbuged and Spank Me Plenty might seem a bit different from space-tyrants or sex-and-drag queens, these titles are able to differentiate themselves with deep, engaging storylines rather than just the ability to flash a cartoon penis at an unsuspecting player.

Coming Out on Top

Coming Out on Top is a dating sim with a focus on gay characters and themes. It was the first cartoon gay game of its kind to gain success on Kickstarter, and has since garnered recognition for its inclusivity in gaming. The game features a diverse cast of characters, each with their own stories and struggles. It also discusses important themes such as self-acceptance and relationships.

Like other visual novels, cartoon gay gameplay is largely text-based and involves clicking through significant amounts of dialog. However, the game’s plot diverges based on your choices. You can choose whether or not to date each man, if you want to fuck them, and which ones you will talk to about certain topics. You can even decide if you want to talk about sex or not, depending on what’s most relevant to each man’s story.

While there have been some who criticize the gay cartoons game for its lack of nudity, it’s important to remember that this is a dating simulator, not a sex simulator. Each storyline is a combination of sex, relationship issues and the personal struggle each man faces.

It’s worth noting that the new demo is censored, so anyone who doesn’t meet the age requirement of their country will have to wait to play it. Thankfully, the full version won’t have such restrictions. Until then, you can try out the original demo to see what all the fuss is about.

Lofty Quest

As the gaming industry has become more open to LGBTQ representation, there have been many indies that have been able to pump out niche cartoon queer games. However, big-name developers have been a bit slower to adopt this style of representation. This isn’t necessarily because they are trying to be anti-gay, but rather they are often looking for the right way to present their LGBTQ themes to players without making it too explicit.

One example of this is Lofty Quest, a platformer that features an LGBTQ protagonist. The character Sister Jessica works with a band of heroes to topple a corrupt King. While the cartoon gay game XXX walks a very fine line between comedy and insult to the homosexual community, it still manages to get a lot of laughs out of players. This is mostly due to the characters who are homosexual, including a pair of twin French dressmakers and an Indian wrestler (who even has a very stereotypical ring name and borderline racist food jokes).

Other examples include the LGBTQ character in EarthBound, Tony, and the canonically gay character in Choice of Broadsides, Villeneuve. More recently, Nintendo has been able to add explicitly gay characters in their Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem series.

Bully

In 2018, a study conducted by Sam Greer found that only 179 games allowed players to embody queer characters, and of those, only 8 were pre-written as queer rather than being a customizable option. Several years prior to games like Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and Assassin’s Creed offering playable queer characters, Bully’s Jimmy Hopkins paved the way with his sexually open characterization. He was a character that Rockstar reflected in the player, and allowed them to engage in same-gender kisses.
