Game developers have made huge strides in creating games that allow players to explore their gender and sexuality more fully than before. Video games offer players the opportunity to examine their own identity and self-reflection in a a safe environment.

Not too long ago, gamers weren’t allowed to play as a gay, lesbian or bisexual character in a big video game, and when queer characters did make an appearance, they were typically underdeveloped or portrayed as stereotypical comedy. Since attitudes toward gaming have changed, publishers and developers are now incorporating LGBT themes and characters into their games.

BioWare’s Dragon Age series, for example, is a collection of queer characters that aren’t afraid to be themselves, including transmen as well as a group of outcasts who join together to form their own community within the midst of the city. It’s a powerful example of how queer representation in gaming can be a positive power for good, and can inspire real-life players to take the first steps towards self-actualization.

Despite the unsettling setting of an old house and its implication that something terrible has happened to the family who live in the house, the tale that unfolds through careful exploration and focus on detail is an inspiring. It’s encouraging to know that, in spite of their family’s wishes, the sister went with her heart.Zynga is the company behind some of the mobile gaming’s most well-known games, has recently introduced Pride themed rewards and cosmetics to some of their games to mark the occasion of Pride Month. Zynga contributes to It Gets Better Project, and assists employees through a variety of diversity initiatives.
